In this video I show you the correct way to set up your iPhone for use with gmail and google apps.

1) Set up synch with the Exchange connector for Calendar and Contacts
2) Set up the gmail connector for email, so you can use drafts.

The standard Gmail connector does not synchronise Contacts, so to use contacts with gmail you must set up the Exchange connector.

The Exchange connectors does not allow you proper use of email drafts, so for that you use the Gmail connector.

Today I’m going to show you how to setup Google Apps on an iPhone the right way. Step number one is setting up your iPhone so you can get your contacts and calendars. Go to the home screen of your phone, click on ‘Settings.’ Now click on ‘Mail, Contacts, and Calendars.’

Starting here, we’re going to add an account and we’re going to use the exchange connector. Might seem a bit odd, but you’ll see why in a minute. So hit ‘Exchange.’ Enter your email address, your username and your password. That’s your full email address, and click ‘Next.’ Your phone will verify it with Google Apps and it will come back and ask you for a server.

That server is m.google.com. Enter that here, and hit ‘Next.’ It’ll get verified, and then it’s going to come back and ask us, what actually are we signing up for? So in here we’re not going to sign up for mail. We’re going to actually add contacts and calendars. There we go, we’ve got our account, so we’re going to click ‘Add Account’ again, and this time we’re going to add Gmail, so that we can get the email in. And the reason we use the Gmail connector is so we can drafts.

So click ‘Add Account’ and then Gmail. Add all your details in, click ‘Next’, let it verify. When it comes back this time, we’re not going to select contacts and calendars, but you’ll notice that contacts and calendars don’t both exist. Only calendars do. So turn on mail, and that’s the reason why we set it up this way. It’s because your Gmail connector doesn’t sync contacts.

There we go I’ve got two accounts. Alright. So let’s have a quick look at that, how you send an email and save drafts. So go to your home screen and open up the mail application. There’s your email, this is a new account, in the bottom right click that little icon, that’s going to compose a mail. I’ve just typed in the subject of draft here, and I’m going to click ‘Cancel’ and ‘Save Draft.’ What that does, is save it in your drafts folder on your Gmail, and on your list of folders in your phone, you can see in the drafts folder here, there’s my draft email.

Let’s have a quick check of the calendar as well. So go back to your home screen and click the calendar icon, and from there, there’s your calendar. Click the ‘Calendars’ link in the top left, that will show you all the calendars that you have. So you can repeat this process as many times as you want and add lots of different calendars. Click the plus sign in the top right, and that will open the middle window for you to type in your appointment. There you go folks, that’s all done.
